 Hemp in semi-rigid panels
Since thousands of years, hemp is used like raw material by the man: until today, it was very appraisal in the design of clothing, manufacture of paper, oil, and also in medicine.
As a renewable raw material, hemp dams up pollution and improves the state of the grounds. During its culture the use of pesticide and insecticide is not necessary. Moreover it cleanses the air, because at the time of its growth it assimilates CO2. After its harvest, hemp leaves a field clean and rich in biogenic salts. The industry of hemp, on a world level, is in full rise. A new market: that of the insulation.
The insulation in hemp, is an ecological product which does not contain any additive likely to harm the environment. At the time of its transformation and its installation, hemp does not constitute a danger to health. The replacement of Hemp does not pose any more one problem because it is a material which can be recycled.
Our hemp is conditioned in panels and is used for the insulation of the roof, the walls, and the ground in the old ones or new construction industries. Its installation (even for the handyman) is simple and rational: a clean work, far from dusty (a very good tolerance of the skin without feelings of itchings), and an optimal insulation, make excellent produced insulation.
The good quality of diffusion of the air of hemp ensures an automatic regularization of moisture without heat loss and makes the dwelling healthy and comfortable. As hemp does not contain albumin, insects do not attack. Moreover hemp is imputrescible and does not contain any element likely to harm the environment.

Advantageous and economic price
The thermo isolation of constructions became a business of specialists. It is all the more complex in restoration where there exists an infinity of particular configurations. The councils, the visit of a professional are often essential.
One can schematically present three standard cases where are implemented of ecological insulators:
To insulate the ceilings rather than the roof
To isolate from the interior
To isolate the rempants from outside
The building board in hemp is characterized mainly by its reduced unit weight. So the panels are very easy to work. Moreover, it has a tensile strength, to compression and the high inflection.
Field of application
Universal employment in the second work, like coating and insulation against the noise.

Let us speak about hemp, type of conditioning:
The wool of hemp in rollers, used for the floors of roofs and crawling them of roof. It has a dissuasive texture for the rodents
Replace rock and glass wools. Excellent capacity of insulation. Light. Exist in rollers thickness 50 mm, 80mm, 100 mm, of width 50 cm length 10 m (for the 50 mm) and 7 m (for the 80 and 100 mm)
Aggregates of hemp (Not stabilized - Hemp construction)
In his rough form, one will thermically use it in the lime mortars for the realization of insulating flagstones phonically and like for the insulation interior and external of the walls.
Be used out of lime concrete insulating for: insulating flagstone, built walls, insulation of walls, roofs… Be used also pure for the soundproofing and thermics between the beams of the floor or in roofs lost

HEMP is an extraordinary plant which we are unfortunately redécouvrir. It pushes quickly, without manure, produces much and does not damage the grounds. Traditionally, one made use of hemp to make ropes, but also clothing (like the first jeans!). In the construction industry, hemp also has its place. It is a material ecological, cheap, not pollutant and simple to use.
Contrary to his/her cousin the still prohibited “cannabis indica” in France because of its content of THC (psychotropic), the “cannabis sativa” or “textile hemp” are cultivated in our country in all legality.
For construction, one uses the bark of his stem, called chènevotte. These fibres, once crushed, must be mixed with a mortar made up of air lime, and other ingredients like, for example, of crushed brick and the large plaster. One then adds water to bind the whole.
The mixture obtained must rest 24:00 before the installation. One makes use of this paste to isolate from the already existing walls out of brick, stone or wooden, after light preparation and damping with whitewash. One can also assemble complete walls, associated with a framework wood or half-timberings.
Once applied to the hand (protection of the front armlevers and the obligatory face), one packs hemp to the maximum. For the roofs and walls, it is often necessary to envisage a light formwork, which one progressively moves of the advance of work (concrete moulding), indeed, ten minutes is enough so that the paste is rather firm and holds all alone.
The material does not retract with drying. He marries the forms perfectly well, and can model himself with wonder. One can leave it such as it is to give a a little rustic aspect, or to cover it with a lighter coating with less hemp and more lime, coloured with natural pigments like ochre for example. The result is a smoother wall, with the desired color.
But this market in full expansion still misses structures. There does not exist, for example, of trade unions to guide the private individual in his step, and that concerns still a little the course of the combatant
I visited some houses, isolated from this manner, to give me an idea of the result, and I followed a training course. But finally, I started the building site only after having met a craftsman specialized in green architecture. He knows all these techniques well (learned for some in Morocco) and lavished councils and support to me
there was no question of removing the tiles of the roof to insulate it by the top, like one generally does it. The installation was made interior, technique still new in France.
A thickness of 23cm of hemp for the roof, 5 with 7cm for the walls according to their orientation… And some burns with the key…
Lime, with the installation, is indeed very acid for the skin and the lungs. “We had protected ourselves the hands with gloves, but that was not sufficient”. The mixture of the various ingredients, the proportion of water for example (which varies according to the temperature, the climate, etc) are not improvised and nothing replaces the know-how of a craftsman.
The advantage of hemp, in addition to its undeniable aesthetic aspect, is that it makes it possible the walls to naturally breathe, removing any cold bridge.
It also insulates at the phonic level. Once dryness, it resists moisture perfectly well. A brick of hemp in water glass is not surbedded (it is thus completely possible to use this material in a bathroom).
As for its protection with fire, it is irreproachable. moreover, association hemp and lime protect the house from the attacks of the vermin, of largest with smallest (of the rats to the acarina!). The cost price (except labour) is not excessive. Thus, for 35 m ² of roof (with 23cm thickness) and of approximately 70 m ² of wall (with 7cm thickness)
Healthy and hot walls, which breathe and release a true feeling of wellbeing, an insulating good allowing of substancielles energy saving, hemp, noble material, is promised with a bright future.
Even if this profession still misses true structures, craftsmen have a perfect command of these techniques (also used in restoration of half-timbered houses) and can right now guide those which wish it.
